TOPIC:
In 1861, a whaleman out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, the whaling capital of the world, returned to port after another long voyage. Once home again, he joined the Union Navy, as did many of his peers. In March 1862, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Randal found himself aboard the USS Cumberland at the Battle of Hampton Roads. Gordon tells us Randal’s story, from Hampton Roads and beyond.
